The Winter Soldier: Knife Fighting Scene

Many of you have definitely seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And if you’re a Filipino martial arts practitioner (like me) or a knife fighting enthusiast (like me again), I’m sure you’re also wowed by the Winter Soldier’s awesome and drool-worthy knife skills.

Look how he tosses his knife up in the air like he’s flair bartending or juggling. Insane! Goose bumps. Yeah yeah, it’s unrealistic and impractical. But hey, it’s visually stimulating and entertaining like most action/superhero movies are.

IMDB trivia – During filming, Sebastian Stan would walk around all day practicing his moves with a plastic knife because he wanted his movements to feel natural.

No wonder, the knife fighting scenes in the movie turned out to be fluid and ahh-mazing!

While I enjoyed the Winter Soldier’s character, I loved Black Widow more, who’s such a bad-ass fighter. Maybe more on her next time.

UPDATE as of August 15, 2014:

Take a peek at the Winter Soldier’s knife fighting training:

Bonus:
Because I get a lot of “Winter Soldier knife” and “knife used by Winter Soldier” inquiries, here’s where you can buy Bucky Barnes’s dagger. It’s The Gerber Mark II, according to Wikipedia. Happy now? You’re welcome! 😀

  1. Have you seen Man From Nowhere? It is a Korean film. In the Korean cc of the version I saw on Netflix (or was it hulu?) it refers to the hero using Hapkido. This whole clip has a lot of knife work, but starting at 5:25 is a duel with an Indonesian using a karambit.

  2. I can’t remember the name of this movie, but you might’ve heard of it if you’re into knife fights. It was probably from the late 80s or early 90s. The movie was about this guy who visits a foreign city and sees this girl get attacked by a guy skilled with a knife. He then, tries to track down the dude while learning to fight from a knife expert. I might have some of the details wrong since I’ve only seen it once. Does this ring a bell? If so, do you know the name of the film?

  3. Though (probably) not inspired by the Metal Gear Solid franchise, you can see VERY strong similarities between the knife fighting in this film vs. the knife fighting in the game franchise (most notably Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater)
